Looking ahead: Education events in 2010
Millions of children still missing out on education, the power of early learning, literacy and gender equity are some of the main themes to be highlighted by UNESCO’s Education Sector in 2010.
The GMR will use an innovative new tool to identify the ‘education poor’ and argue that the failure to reach marginalized children is holding back overall progress on education.
Protecting schools, teachers and pupils from attack and damage during times of conflict and disaster is the subject of two new reports. Education under Attack 2010 and Protecting Education from Attack: A State of the Art Review will be launched in New York on February 10 and in Paris on March 10.
Gender will be to the fore as the subject of the UNESCO Institute for Statistics Global Education Digest to launch in July and an online discussion on Gender, Education and Training open from 10 January to 7 February 2010. The discussion is part of the 15-year review of the Beijing Platform for Action (formed after the UN Fourth World Conference on Women, Beijing 1995) and will explore and analyze emerging developments, challenges and policy issues.
UNESCO is preparing for a major conference on the importance of Early Childhood Care and Education which will take place in Moscow on September 22 to 24. Full details will be available through this website.
In addition UNESCO will award two prizes; the King-Hamad Bin Isa Al Khalifa Prize for the Use of ICTs in Education in Paris in January and the first ever Hamdan Bin Rashil Al Maktoum Prize for Outstanding Practice and Performance in Enhancing the Effectiveness of Teachers in Dubai in March.
