HAY FESTIVAL

A taste of Hay in London

A taste of Hay in London

Hay in the Basin – Kings Place, London, Monday 20 April

A taste of The Guardian Hay Festival is coming to the iconic new London venue on Monday for a mini-festival evening featuring three of the most compelling writers and speakers in Britain. Novelist and philosopher Alain de Botton heads out into the under-charted worlds of the office, the factory, the fishing-fleet and the call centre in his new book The Pleasures and Sorrows of Work. Masterly biographer and novelist Peter Ackroyd introduces his Retelling of The Canterbury Tales from bawdy yarn to allegorical fable and courtly romance. Philosopher AC Grayling celebrates the power of thought in his Ideas That Matter: A Personal Guide for the C21st.

The evening will start at 7pm and end at 9.30pm.

Oh my goodness, Hay Festival and Alain de Botton combined!!! What I wouldn't give to be at Hay-on-Wye this summer!! I have just spent the last few days writing a report on Hay Festival 2008 for my graduate studies application as evidence of my attendance to the event. And what do I find in the mail but this very tempting lure to London!

I hear that Hay 2009 will be really really fun, especially because the likes of Stephen Fry, Emma Darwin (the biologist's great-great-grand daughter as well as a famed novelist, don't you know), Jacqueline Wilson, Michael Morpurgo, Desmond Tutu, Anthony Horowitz, David Crystal, Alain de Botton, Sophie Dahl, Sarah Waters, Sting!!!! will all be gracing the audience with their appearance. Also, this year's music theme is Jazz, so there will be numerous performances in between talks and discussions to jazz things up;)

If you are interested, bookings start 20th April, unless you are a Friend of the Festival, in which case it's already begun! Hurry hurry, get those seats for Alain de Botton and Stephen Fry and Sting!

Oh, and don't forget to try Burnt Sugar, Hay-on-Wye's very own hand-made fudge, not to mention Shepherd's Ice Cream, fresh and organic sheepsmilk ice cream:^D

The Hay Festival is a really good excuse to go to Wales and enjoy nature in a small but beautiful town!
