Forever Student

I love being a student. I want to be a university student forever. Just the prospect of so many courses (which open new perspectives on and into life, history, culture, literature, everything!!) that I can take, so many new things I can learn, so many diverse people of different backgrounds and perspectives readily awaiting anyone who will come and listen.. just that prospect is enough to excite me and make my heart dance.

This semester, I am dying to take 4 graduate courses (apparently a no-no for a 1st semester MA student, because it will be so much work.. will have to work it out with my advisor) and sit 3-4 undergraduate courses:

Graduate

 서사시의 전통                      서홍원,윤혜준  월2,3,4
 낭만주의영국시연구(1)  신경숙  수8,9,10
 세기말문학과예술  박형지   월6,7,8
 영어논문작성법  방펄                   금6,7,8

Undergraduate

 영국문학개관(2)      김준환    화5,6,목4
 영국문화   윤혜준  화2,3,목1
 영국사상    윤혜준   화4,목5,6
 문화연구:주요개념과쟁점  김준환  화1,목2,3

Actually, if I could have it my way, there are 2 more courses I want to audit. But I know that's going a bit too far, nearing insanity maybe? Perhaps I am part vain, part naive, but I really do believe that if I just schedule everything and prioritize wisely, nothing will be too much to handle. I don't fear hard work and bookpiles or readings to do, but one fear that I do have is that soon, it will be too late to absolutely immerse myself with courses that I want to take once I start writing my dissertation, go on to a PhD degree, etc. I wish I could be a university student forever, learn new things about life and the world and how people do and don't think forever. This semester, I am planning to take on British Literature full-on.

I have to remind myself why I chose to MA in Korea, which is to get a firm general overview of literature. I wanted to make a clear choice on which area I would prefer to study for the rest of my life (although I love them all!!) I have been quite doubtful of my choice to go to Yonsei for a while, but one evident fact is that they have a more comprehensive overview of literature. With almost 1/3 more classes that KU but half the student number. I am slightly envious of Yonsei Eng UG students who continue to MA studies, because the course then flows into in-depth study of areas divided not into periods and regions but perspectives. But I hope to make that up with a lot of effort and hard work (although as I often say, 'studying' literature does not feel like studying at all, it's so much fun!).

There are so many things I still want to learn, still so much I want to try my hands at and see if I am any good. But first, the mountain I need to climb stands before me, and I am sooo ready to take on this one, and the next!
